Distinguish between Hot rolled coils and Cold rolled coils

26/07/2024

Stainless steel is a familiar material used in countless applications, from civil to industrial sectors. Within the stainless steel market, there are three primary product lines: industrial stainless steel tubes, ornamental stainless steel tubes, hot hot-rolled and cold-rolled coils.  This article will guide you through the key distinctions between hot-rolled and cold-rolled stainless steel coils.

1. Hot Rolled Coils

1.1. Concept

Hot-rolled coils are produced through a high-temperature rolling process that alters the metal’s physical structure. This process makes the metal softer and more malleable, allowing it to be shaped into desired sizes and forms.  The hot rolling process not only creates coils with suitable mechanical properties but also ensures precise dimensions for specific applications.

1.2. Characteristics of Hot Rolled Coils

Hot rolled coils typically have a dark blue surface with an oily sheen and a thickness of 1mm or more.  Their sides are often rough and uneven. When left outdoors for extended periods, hot rolled coils can rust, resulting in a reddish surface.

1.3. Applications of Hot Rolled Coils

Hot-rolled coils are primarily used as the material for producing cold-rolled stainless steel coils. Their flexibility and ease of shaping also make them suitable for various applications, including the automotive industry, rail construction, shipbuilding, and the production of roofing sheets and stainless steel structural shapes (I, V, U, and H).

Cold Rolled Coil: What is it?

2.1. Concept

Cold rolled coils are produced by further processing hot rolled coils. This involves gradually reducing the thickness of the stainless steel to approximately ±0.3mm while simultaneously cooling it to room temperature.  This cold rolling process enhances the hardness and strength of the stainless steel without altering its material structure.

2.2. Characteristics of Cold Rolled Coils

Cold-rolled coils offer exceptional corrosion resistance, heat resistance, ductility, and tensile strength. They are easily stretched and thinned for processing and shaping, and their surface is smoother than hot rolled coils.

2.3. Applications of Cold Rolled Coils

Cold-rolled coils find widespread use in the production of automobiles, air conditioners, refrigerators, computers, electrical equipment, locomotives, precision instruments, food containers, and various other applications.
While offering enhanced hardness and durability compared to hot-rolled coils, cold-rolled coils also come at a higher price.
